M-Bus

M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a European standard for remote reading of utility meters, such as electricity, gas, water, or heat meters. It is designed for communication over twisted pair cables and is widely used in energy monitoring systems.

Features

  • Supports communication with multiple meters over a single bus.
  • Low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-powered meters.
  • Reliable and robust communication over long distances.

Requirements

To connect M-Bus meters to the gateways, an M-Bus Modbus converter is required. This converter translates M-Bus signals into Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP, which are supported by the gateways.

Setup

  1. Connect the M-Bus meters to the M-Bus Modbus converter.
  2. Configure the converter to match the communication settings of the gateway (e.g., baud rate, parity, etc.).
  3. Connect the converter to the gateway using the RS-485 interface or Ethernet, depending on the converter type.
  4. Use the rayleighconnect™ cloud platform to configure the gateway for data acquisition from the connected meters.

Use Cases

  • Monitoring utility consumption in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings.
  • Collecting data from multiple meters for centralized analysis and reporting.
  • Integrating M-Bus meters into energy management systems.

Limitations

  • The number of meters that can be connected depends on the capacity of the M-Bus converter.
  • Proper termination and wiring are essential to ensure reliable communication.
